Invitation to Webinar with Prof. Dr. Jörg Overmann on July 14, 2022

As part of our webinar series, the MultiKulti group welcomes Prof. Dr. Jörg Overmann for an online talk on July 14, 2022.

Prof. Dr. Jörg Overmann is Director of the German Collection of Microorganisms and Cell Cultures (DSMZ) and also professor of microbiology at the University of Technology in Braunschweig. The research of his group “Microbial Ecology and Diversity” focuses on the evolution of bacterial genomes and also on diversity and biogeochemical factors that influence bacterial communities in the environment. An additional field of research is the investigation of the molecular mechanisms of bacterial interactions, also in microbiomes.

Using innovative cultivation strategies, he isolated and described numerous new bacterial species that could not be cultured previously. As the title “Culturing bacterial black matter” already indicates, he will give us insights into these approaches during the talk. Modern molecular techniques not only allow analyses of bacterial diversity at very high coverage and resolution, but also can yield predictions of bacterial adaptations. In his talk, Prof. Dr. Jörg Overmann will describe how this information can be used to develop novel cultivation approaches and report on their success for retrieval of novel types of bacteria from environmental samples.

We look forward to an interesting webinar and a lively and stimulating scientific exchange. The talk will start at 4:15 pm on 14th of July 2022. Interested guests are warmly welcome, please get the login data by contacting info@multikultivierung.de.
